Poetto beach and turquoise waters on the Gulf of Angels

From the cruise port

Poetto Beach from Cagliari Cruise Port

Eight kilometres of urban sand on the Gulf of Angels — chiringuitos, calm shallows and the Sella del Diavolo headland at your shoulder.

Distance

About 4–5 km / 15–20 min by road

Travel time

15–20 minutes by taxi or bus from the port area

Time needed

Allow 2–4 hours for beach time and promenade stroll

Poetto is Cagliari's city beach: a long crescent of pale sand facing the Gulf of Cagliari, backed by cafés and the distinctive Sella del Diavolo promontory. From Stazione Marittima it is not walkable in comfort — plan on a bus or taxi — but it is close enough for a relaxed half-day of sun and sea when you want a break from hilltop sightseeing.

Cruise ships dock at Stazione Marittima on Molo Ichnusa, roughly 4–5 km west of Poetto's main stretch. Walking the full distance along busy roads is not practical on a port day; instead, take a taxi (about 15–20 minutes) or CTM bus lines PF or PQ from Via Roma or the port area toward Poetto. Drop-off points are signed along the lungomare — the central sections near Quartiere Sant'Elia are the most popular.

The beach itself is wide and gently shelving, with calm water in the lee of the gulf — ideal for a swim between April and October. Summer brings chiringuito bars, pedal boats and a lively local crowd; off-season calls are quieter but still photogenic, especially with the Sella del Diavolo cliffs rising at the southern end. Allow two to three hours if you want a swim, a drink and a stroll along the promenade.

Poetto pairs well with Molentargius flamingo park — the wetlands lie between the city and the beach, so some passengers visit the lagoon in the morning and finish at Poetto for lunch. It is the best low-effort outdoor option when your ship is in for a half-day and you prefer sand to coach trips inland.

Poetto Beach from the Cruise Port — FAQs

Can I walk to Poetto from Cagliari cruise port?

Not realistically — it is 4–5 km along busy roads. Take a taxi (15–20 minutes) or CTM bus PF/PQ from the city centre near the port.

Is Poetto good for swimming on a cruise port day?

Yes from late spring through autumn — the gulf water is calm and shallow near shore. Atlantic-style currents are mild compared with open-coast beaches.

How much time should I allow at Poetto?

Plan two to three hours for a swim and promenade stroll, or up to four hours if you add lunch at a beach café before returning to Stazione Marittima.
